Saint Monica

Saint Monica was born in Tagaste, in Numidia (present-day Algeria), in 331 AD. She is especially known as the mother of Saint Augustine, one of the greatest Doctors of the Church and a strong opponent of heresies. Her life was marked by deep faith, unceasing prayer and a steadfast trust in God’s mercy.

As a young Christian woman, Monica married a pagan husband, with whom she had three children. With patience and silent witness, she succeeded in bringing her husband to the Christian faith and devoted herself to raising her children according to the Gospel.

Her greatest sorrow was her son Augustine. During his studies in Carthage, he moved further and further away from Christian principles. From a relationship with an unknown woman, a son was born, Adeodatus. In 374 AD, Augustine left the Christian faith and embraced Manichaean heresy, which caused Monica intense suffering, as she longed to see him baptized.

Instead of giving up, Monica intensified her prayers and penance. When Augustine moved to Rome and then to Milan in 383 AD, she followed him, sustained by the hope that God would one day grant his conversion. In Milan, Augustine met Bishop Ambrose, whose preaching became decisive for his journey of faith.

On the Easter night of 387 AD, Augustine received baptism together with his son Adeodatus, with Monica present. This moment crowned years of tears, waiting and intercession. Shortly afterwards, on the return journey to Africa, Monica died suddenly in Ostia, after entrusting her son’s future entirely to God.

The relics of Saint Monica are venerated today in the church of Saint Augustine in Rome. She remains a powerful example for Christian women and mothers who pray for the salvation of their children.
