Saint Peter, first Pope and apostle of Jesus, was crucified in Rome. Patron of fishermen and the Church. Feast on June 29.
Jesus said: “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church.” Simon, the Galilean fisherman, became Saint Peter, leader of the apostles and the first pope.
He left everything to follow Jesus, becoming the most prominent of the apostles. He preached in Palestine and Asia Minor and was imprisoned several times. According to tradition, an angel miraculously freed him.
He was crucified in Rome in 64 AD during Nero’s persecution. He asked to be crucified upside down, not feeling worthy to die like Christ. His remains lie beneath St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Iconography: with keys, upside-down cross, fish, rooster, in prison, with Saint Paul.
Feast day: June 29 (with Saint Paul)
Patron: of Rome, popes, confessors, fishermen, carpenters, masons, and against fever, theft, and snake bites.
