Saint Paul

Apostle of the Gentiles and first Christian theologian

Born in Tarsus as Saul, Saint Paul was a Roman citizen and devout Jew. Initially a fierce persecutor of Christians, he converted after a vision of the risen Christ on the road to Damascus.

After retreating into the desert, Paul began missionary journeys to convert pagans and founded Christian communities throughout the Roman Empire. He maintained contact through his Epistles, which form a significant part of the New Testament.

Paul was imprisoned and eventually executed in Rome in 67 AD. Tradition says he was beheaded, and three springs emerged where his head struck the ground. His relics rest in three places in Rome.

Iconography: with sword, scrolls, overturned altar, three springs, often with Saint Peter.

Feast day: June 29 (with Saint Peter)
Patron: of Rome, Malta, theologians, shepherds, seafarers, Catholic press, and against ear diseases and bad weather.
