Saint Barbara

Symbol of courage, steadfast faith, and divine protection

Saint Barbara is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and has been venerated for centuries. According to tradition, she was born in Nicomedia (now İzmit, Turkey). Her pagan father Dioscorus persecuted her after discovering her secret conversion to Christianity. Despite torture, Barbara remained faithful. She was eventually beheaded by her father, who was then struck by lightning.

She is the patron saint of towers, fortresses, miners, craftsmen, firefighters, and the dying. She is invoked against fire, storms, fever, and plague. Her relics are preserved on the island of Torcello near Venice.
