Saint John of God is the patron saint of nurses and hospitals. Founder of the Brothers Hospitallers, he devoted his life to the care of the sick and the poor.
Saint John of God, born Juan Ciudad on March 8, 1495, in Portugal, is known as the pioneer of hospital care and mental health assistance. After a turbulent youth, he changed his life through repentance and charity. He opened a hospital in Spain and inspired the founding of the Brothers Hospitallers.
Though not a priest, John helped the sick, the poor, prisoners, and outcasts with great mercy. He died on March 8, 1550, in Granada, kneeling before an image of Christ. Canonized in 1691, he is the patron saint of hospitals, nurses, and booksellers.
