Don Bosco

A life for youth – founder of the Salesians

John Bosco was a gifted teacher and educator who devoted his life to helping young people. He was born on August 16, 1815, in Becchi, Piedmont, into a poor farming family. From a young age, he experienced hardship and worked to support his household. Courageous and just, he quickly became a leader among his peers.

At the age of nine, a dream revealed his mission: the education of youth. He entered the seminary in Chieri at 16 and was ordained on June 6, 1841. In Turin, he studied further and began caring for poor apprentices and orphans, forming the first oratory.

Don Bosco provided food, education, and faith. He prayed and played with the boys and called on his mother for domestic help. As their numbers grew, he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco, named after St. Francis de Sales, and later, with Maria Mazzarello, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.

His educational approach focused on kindness, gentleness, and trust. Don Bosco prioritized moral and religious formation over academics. Despite threats and betrayals, he believed in the potential of every youth. He created vocational schools, hospitals, and youth centers, which eventually spread worldwide.

He was also a prolific writer, publishing over 135 works. Don Bosco died on January 31, 1888, in Turin. He was beatified in 1929 and canonized in 1934. He remains one of the most beloved saints, often called “the cheerful saint.”
