Saint Anthony the Abbot, also known as Saint Anthony the Great or of the Desert, is regarded as the founder of Christian Monasticism. Born in Egypt around 250 AD, he gave up his wealth to live as a hermit in the desert of Thebaid. His fame quickly spread and many followed his example.

He died over 100 years old in 357 AD, and his relics are now venerated in Arles, France. He is known for his spiritual struggle against temptations and as a protector of animals.

Feast day: January 17
Patron saint: of domestic animals, swineherds, butchers, weavers, pastry chefs, and against disease and fire.
