Baptism of Jesus

The Baptism of Jesus represents one of the most important moments in the life of Jesus Christ and is narrated in the Gospel according to Mark. The scene recalls the moment when Jesus was baptized by Saint John the Baptist in the waters of the Jordan River, marking the beginning of His public and spiritual mission.

According to the Gospel, when Jesus came out of the water, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove, while a voice from heaven proclaimed: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (Mark 1:9-11).

This episode represents the revelation of Jesus as the Son of God and as the Light of the World. The baptism symbolically marks the passage from darkness to salvation and divine revelation.

John the Baptist had prepared the people for the coming of the Messiah by preaching repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sins throughout Judea. Thousands of people came to the Jordan River to receive baptism and listen to his message of conversion and faith.

John proclaimed the coming of Jesus Christ, emphasizing the greatness of God and the importance of humility. He taught that God must have first place in the life of every human being.

After His baptism, Jesus left His family and village to begin His divine mission. The Gospel recounts that the Spirit led Him into the desert for forty days, where He was tempted by Satan and served by angels. Afterwards, He began preaching the Gospel in Galilee together with His disciples.

The baptism of Jesus therefore represents the beginning of His public life as the Messiah, sent to proclaim the Kingdom of God and bring salvation to humanity.

The Bible does not clearly explain why Jesus wanted to be baptized, even though He was without sin. According to Christian tradition, His baptism represents an act of humility and solidarity with humanity, sharing the human condition and providing an example for His followers.

From that moment on, Holy Baptism became one of the fundamental sacraments of all Christian religions. In the Catholic Church, through baptism the believer symbolically becomes a Child of God and enters the Christian community.

Parents and godparents take on the responsibility of guiding the baptized person in the growth of Christian faith and spiritual life.
