John the Baptist, forerunner of Christ, is a symbol of penance, truth, and prophecy. Celebrated on June 24.
John the Baptist is one of the most well-known saints of early Christianity. Son of Elizabeth and Zechariah, he was born about six months before Jesus, despite his mother’s old age. At his birth, Zechariah miraculously regained his speech and praised God.
John lived in the desert in prayer and penance, then began preaching the coming of the Messiah and baptizing in the Jordan River. When Jesus came to be baptized, John proclaimed him the Lamb of God. From then on, his disciples followed Jesus.
After denouncing Herod’s unlawful relationship with Herodias, John was imprisoned and later beheaded at Salome’s request. His tomb, discovered in Samaria in 1931, is now open to visitors.
