Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of music and musicians. She is venerated for her unwavering faith, purity, and celestial inspiration for sacred art.
Saint Cecilia is one of the most beloved saints in Christian tradition, especially as the patron saint of music.
According to legend, she was born into a noble Roman family and lived in the 3rd century AD. She received a Christian education and made a vow of chastity. Her parents arranged her marriage to Valerian, a pagan nobleman who later converted after learning of her vow. His brother Tiburtius also converted. Both were martyred for helping persecuted Christians.
After their deaths, Cecilia was arrested. She refused to worship pagan gods and was condemned to death. She miraculously survived both suffocation and an attempted beheading, living for three days with a deep wound on her neck. She died on 22 November, likely in 230 AD.
Her incorrupt body was discovered and is now preserved in the Basilica of Saint Cecilia in Trastevere. She is associated with music because of a line in the Acts of the Martyrs: on her wedding day, while instruments were playing, Cecilia prayed, listening to the music of angels.
