Jesus the Good Shepherd

Jesus the Good Shepherd is one of the oldest and most beloved representations of Jesus Christ. The image is inspired by the Gospel of John, where Jesus says: “I am the Good Shepherd”. Through this allegory, Christ presents Himself as the loving shepherd who guides, protects and saves His flock.

In Christian tradition, the Good Shepherd is the one willing to sacrifice His own life for His sheep whenever they are in danger. This image is interpreted as a symbol of the Passion of Christ and of Jesus’ voluntary sacrifice on the cross for the salvation of humanity.

Jesus looks upon the people with mercy, recognizing in them “sheep without a shepherd”. He is the spiritual guide who knows every sheep “by name,” meaning that He deeply knows every human being and loves each person in a unique and personal way.

At the same time, the sheep recognize the voice of their shepherd and feel protected, loved and guided by Him. This image represents the profound bond between Christ and the faithful, founded on trust, love and salvation.

In the famous parable of the lost sheep (Matthew 18:12-14), Jesus tells of a shepherd who leaves ninety-nine sheep to search for the one that is lost. When he finds it, he rejoices more over that sheep than over all the others that had not wandered away.

Through this parable, Jesus teaches that no person is forgotten in the eyes of God and that the Heavenly Father desires the salvation of every human being.

The image of the Good Shepherd inspired countless artists throughout the centuries. Representations of Jesus carrying a sheep on His shoulders already appeared in the ancient Roman catacombs and are among the oldest known Christian images.

From the nineteenth century onward, the figure of Jesus the Good Shepherd spread in many artistic variations, becoming a universal symbol of tenderness, care, protection and merciful love.

The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Jesus the Good Shepherd on the third Sunday after Easter, when the related Gospel passage is proclaimed during the liturgy.

The expression “Good Shepherd” and the Latin word “pastor” are also used in many Christian communities as titles for priests and for numerous churches dedicated to Christ the Shepherd.

Iconography: Jesus the Good Shepherd is depicted carrying a sheep on His shoulders or surrounded by His flock.
