Wooden statues of Saint Martin of Tours, bishop, soldier, and protector of the poor. Discover the saint of charity and humility, celebrated on November 11.
Saint Martin of Tours (316–397 AD) is one of the most revered saints in Europe. He is known for his deep compassion, humility, and commitment to the poor and needy. His life story remains an inspiration across centuries and cultures.
Martin was born in Sabaria (present-day Szombathely, Hungary) into a pagan Roman family. His father, a military officer, forced him into the army at 15. While stationed in Gaul, Martin encountered a freezing beggar outside the city of Amiens. He cut his cloak in half with his sword and gave part of it to the man. That night, Christ appeared to him in a dream wearing the cloak, urging him to be baptized.
Martin was baptized a year later. After leaving the army, he lived as a hermit, embracing a life of prayer and contemplation. He joined Hilary of Poitiers and later founded the first monastery in Europe in Ligugé. His simple yet powerful preaching touched many lives, and he converted entire villages in rural Gaul.
In 371, he was appointed Bishop of Tours by popular acclaim. He refused luxury and chose to live in poverty, founding the Abbey of Marmoutier near the city. He led his diocese with justice, mercy, and great zeal, confronting pagan practices and promoting Christian values. Numerous miracles are attributed to him, including raising the dead.
Martin died on November 8, 397, in Candes. His funeral in Tours was attended by thousands, including over 2,000 monks. A small church was built over his tomb and named capella (Latin for “small cloak”), giving rise to the word “chapel.”
