Our Lady of Fatima

One of the most important Marian apparitions of the 20th century

Our Lady of Fatima is one of the titles under which the Catholic Church venerates Mary, the mother of Jesus. She appeared several times in 1917 to three shepherd children – Francisco and Jacinta Marto and their cousin Lucia dos Santos – in the Portuguese town of Fátima, dressed in white robes.

The town of Fátima is named after a Moorish princess who converted to Christianity in the 12th century after marrying a Portuguese noble. She was baptized “Aureana” and buried in the village church, which later gave its name to the town.

The apparitions and the Miracle of the Sun

Mary asked the children to return on the 13th of each month and to pray the Rosary daily. On October 13, 1917, the Miracle of the Sun occurred: thousands saw the sun spin, change colors, and move erratically without causing harm. This event is considered one of the most important miracles of the 20th century.

In 1920, the Bishop of Leiria officially recognized the apparitions, and the devotion to Our Lady of Fatima spread worldwide.

The Three Secrets of Fatima

On July 13, Mary revealed three prophetic secrets: a vision of hell, a prophecy about World War II and the conversion of Russia, and a third secret – disclosed in 2000 by Cardinal Ratzinger – about the persecution of Christians.

Pope John Paul II and Fatima

Pope John Paul II believed that Our Lady of Fatima saved him during the assassination attempt on May 13, 1981. In 1982, he made a pilgrimage to Fatima to thank her, bringing the bullet that had been removed from his body. He visited Fatima three times.

The Sanctuary today

Fatima is now one of the most visited Marian shrines in the world, welcoming over four million pilgrims annually. The site includes the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Church of the Most Holy Trinity (built in 2007 with 9,000 seats), and the Chapel of the Apparitions at Cova da Iria. The candlelit evening Masses are especially moving, symbolizing the pilgrims’ deep devotion.
