Explore statues of Francisco Marto, the young seer of Fatima. A symbol of childlike faith and purity, carved in wood with devotion and care.
Francisco Marto was one of the three children who received the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Fatima in 1917, during which the famous Three Secrets of Fatima were revealed.
He was born on June 11, 1908 in Aljustrel, Portugal, to Manuel Pedro Marto and Olimpia de Jesus. Francisco loved nature and spent his days herding sheep, singing, playing, and praying. His deepest desire was to do only what pleased God.
In 1916, he, his sister Jacinta, and their cousin Lucia dos Santos were visited three times by an angel at Loca da Cabeco. In 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to them six times. Francisco could see Mary, but not hear her. Still, he understood her call to prayer and penance, and he prayed to console the Lord.
In 1918, Francisco fell ill with the Spanish flu. The Virgin appeared to him and promised to take him to Heaven. On April 2 he received First Communion, and died the next day at the age of ten. He said goodbye to Jacinta with: “See you in Heaven.”
In May 2000, Pope John Paul II beatified Francisco and Jacinta; Lucia, then 93, was present. On May 13, 2017, Pope Francis declared Francisco a saint.
Francisco is portrayed as a young shepherd with a staff and a satchel, symbols of his simplicity and humility.
