Romanesque Crucifixion with Titulus Crucis in Hebrew, Latin and Greek

This Romanesque Crucifixion presents the crucified Christ accompanied by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist. Together, they form one of the most meaningful scenes of Christian faith and devotion.

A defining feature of this composition is the Titulus Crucis, the inscription placed above Christ's head by order of Pontius Pilate. According to the Gospel accounts, the text was written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek, the principal languages spoken in Jerusalem at the time of the Crucifixion.

The Titulus Crucis traditionally proclaimed: “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews,” commonly known through the abbreviation INRI. Its presence highlights the historical authenticity of the scene and the universal kingship of Christ.

The sculpture follows the principles of Romanesque art, distinguished by symbolic simplicity, balanced proportions and spiritual depth. The composition recalls the sacred sculptures of medieval churches and monasteries.

Crafted from maple or oak wood by artisans of the Val Gardena - Dolomites, this work preserves a centuries-old tradition of sacred woodcarving.
