St. Giles the Abbot

St. Giles lived between the seventh and eighth centuries and is regarded as one of the most important saints of European Christianity. Born most likely in Athens, he left his homeland to devote himself entirely to prayer, solitude and service to God.

After spending time as a hermit, he settled in southern France, where his reputation for holiness attracted many followers. A monastic community eventually developed around him and became one of the most influential abbeys of the Middle Ages.

According to tradition, a hind nourished him with her milk while he lived in the forest. When hunters pursued the animal, an arrow intended for the deer struck the saint instead. Because of this story, the hind became his most recognizable symbol.

St. Giles is counted among the Fourteen Holy Helpers and has long been invoked as a protector of the sick, people with disabilities, the poor and all those facing physical or spiritual difficulties.

This sculpture is crafted from maple or lime wood by artisans of the Val Gardena - Dolomites, preserving a centuries-old tradition of sacred woodcarving.

Iconography: depicted as an abbot with a pastoral staff, often accompanied by a hind.

Feast Day: September 1.

Patron: the sick, people with disabilities, the marginalized and those seeking protection.
