St. Anthony of Padua – Life, symbols and patronage

Discover the life of one of the most beloved and venerated saints in Christianity

St. Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon in 1195 under the name Fernando, into a noble family. At the age of fifteen, he joined the Canons Regular of St. Augustine, where he developed a deep knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. In 1220, he joined the Franciscans of Coimbra and took the name Brother Anthony.

Wishing to become a missionary and martyr in Morocco, he was forced to return due to severe fevers. A storm caused his shipwreck on the coast of Sicily. He then travelled north to Assisi for the General Chapter, where he met St. Francis. His eloquence and deep culture were revealed during an improvised sermon, which brought him fame within the Order.

In 1224 he was sent as a missionary and preacher to northern Italy, with success in Milan and Rimini, and later to France, where he opposed heresies. Returning to Italy, he settled in Padua, where his reputation as an extraordinary preacher attracted large crowds.

He died on 13 June 1231 in the convent of Arcella, near Padua. Only nine months later he was canonised by Pope Gregory IX. In 1946 he was declared a Doctor of the Church.
