Saint Christopher

Saint Christopher is one of the most famous and venerated helper saints in Christian tradition. His figure is linked to the protection of travelers, pilgrims and all those who journey through life.

Historical information about the life of Saint Christopher is limited. It is only certain that he was a Christian martyr who lived before the year 454 A.D. in the ancient Greek city of Chalcedon, today’s Kadıköy district of Istanbul. He probably died during the persecutions of Emperor Decius in Asia Minor.

Over time, many legends arose around his figure, helping to make him one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages.

According to ancient Eastern traditions, Christopher was originally a gigantic man named Reprobus. After receiving baptism, he was given the name Christopher and the gift of speaking and proclaiming the Gospel.

Driven by deep faith, he began traveling to preach Christianity. During the persecutions against Christians, he encouraged many martyrs and converted numerous people to the Christian faith, including soldiers and women sent to tempt him.

According to legend, even the archers sent to kill him were unable to strike him, because their arrows miraculously stopped in midair. After his martyrdom by beheading, the emperor himself converted to Christianity.

The Western tradition, narrated in the famous Golden Legend by Jacobus de Voragine, instead recounts the most famous episode of Saint Christopher’s life.

Christopher was a giant of extraordinary strength who lived near a river and helped travelers cross by carrying them on his shoulders. One night, a small child asked him to carry him across to the other side.

Christopher placed the child on his shoulders and began crossing the river. However, the farther he went into the water, the heavier the child became. With enormous effort and aided by his long staff, he finally managed to reach the opposite shore.

There the child revealed Himself as Jesus Christ and explained to Christopher that he had carried not only a child, but the weight of the sins of the whole world. From that moment, he received the name Christopher, which in Greek means “Christ-bearer”.

The devotion to Saint Christopher first spread in the area of Byzantium, later reaching Italy, Spain and all medieval Europe.

During the Middle Ages, people believed that looking at an image of Saint Christopher in the morning would protect them throughout the day. Even today, he is considered the great protector of travelers and means of transport.
