Statue of Saint Lawrence, Christian deacon and martyr, symbol of charity, courage and faithfulness to the Church. Patron saint of librarians, cooks and firefighters.
Saint Lawrence is one of the most venerated martyrs of the Christian Church and is remembered as an example of extraordinary charity, faith and courage.
Historical information about his life is limited and mainly derives from Christian oral tradition.
According to tradition, Lawrence was born in Osca, in present-day Aragon in Spain, and became one of the closest collaborators of Pope Sixtus II, serving as his archdeacon.
A deep friendship and great mutual trust soon developed between the Pope and Lawrence.
As a deacon of the Roman Church, Saint Lawrence was entrusted with administering Church property and distributing it to the poor and needy.
For this reason, he is considered one of the first archivists and librarians of the Church.
During the persecutions against Christians under Emperor Valerian, the execution of bishops, priests and deacons was ordered.
On August 6, 258 A.D., Pope Sixtus II, Saint Lawrence and the other deacons were arrested while celebrating Mass in the Catacombs of Saint Callistus.
The Pope was beheaded on the same day, while Lawrence suffered martyrdom a few days later.
According to Christian tradition, he was tortured on a burning gridiron, where he was slowly roasted alive.
Before his death, Pope Sixtus II had asked Lawrence to distribute all the treasures of the Church to the poor.
When the emperor demanded to know where the Church’s treasures were hidden, Lawrence appeared before him accompanied by the poor, the sick and the needy, saying:
“Behold the treasures of the Church.”
This gesture made Saint Lawrence a symbol of true Christian wealth founded on charity and care for others.
Saint Lawrence is buried in the basilica of Saint Lawrence Outside the Walls in Rome, one of the most important churches dedicated to the saint.
According to tradition, his head is preserved in the Vatican among the most precious relics of Christianity.
Devotion to Saint Lawrence spread rapidly throughout Europe, and many popular traditions are still connected to his memory today.
The shooting stars visible during the nights around August 10 are traditionally called the “Tears of Saint Lawrence.”
