Romanesque St. John for Crucifixion

St. John, one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus, is traditionally depicted standing beneath the Cross during the Crucifixion. While many disciples fled in fear, John remained beside Christ until the very end, becoming a symbol of faithfulness and steadfast love.

According to the Gospel, it was beneath the Cross that Jesus entrusted the Virgin Mary to John, saying: “Behold your mother.” This event makes St. John a symbol of the bond between Christ, Mary and the Church.

The figure of St. John in the Crucifixion scene invites believers to contemplate Christ’s sacrifice and the importance of remaining faithful even in times of suffering and uncertainty.

This sculpture is inspired by the Romanesque style, characterized by harmonious forms, symbolic simplicity and spiritual depth. Its timeless appearance recalls the sacred sculptures of medieval churches and monasteries.

The piece is crafted from maple or oak wood by artisans of the Val Gardena - Dolomites, preserving a centuries-old tradition of sacred woodcarving.

Placed beside a crucifix and the figure of the Virgin Mary, Romanesque St. John completes the traditional Crucifixion composition and gives the ensemble profound spiritual significance.
