Saint Roch

Pilgrim, healer and protector from epidemics

Born in Montpellier in 1295, Saint Roch is widely venerated, although his life is known mainly through legend. Tradition says he was born with a red cross on his chest, a sign of divine favor. After losing his parents at 20, he gave away his wealth and became a pilgrim.

As a member of the Franciscan Third Order, he traveled to Italy to care for victims of the plague. He himself became ill and withdrew to the woods, where an angel healed him and a dog brought him bread daily. Recovered, he returned to help others until the plague subsided.

Back in Montpellier, he was imprisoned as a spy and remained silent about his identity. He died in 1327 and was recognized by the cross on his chest. His relics are in Venice.

Iconography: as a pilgrim with dog, staff, flask, showing plague sore, sometimes with Saint Sebastian.

Feast day: August 16
Patron saint: of Montpellier, Venice, Parma, the sick, hospitals, doctors, farmers, gardeners, carpenters, and against plague and epidemics.
