Mary Help of Christians

Protector of the Church and symbol of divine assistance

Mary Help of Christians is a Marian title rooted in the Litany of Loreto from the 16th century. The devotion spread after the Battle of Lepanto (1571), when Pope Pius V first invoked the Virgin Mary as Auxilium Christianorum, entrusting her with the fate of Christianity.

Don Bosco was one of the greatest devotees. In 1863, he founded the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin and inspired the founding of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, the female branch of the Salesians. She is also known as the Madonna of Don Bosco.

Mary Help of Christians is patroness of Poland, Austria, China, and Argentina. Her feast is celebrated on May 24 to commemorate the liberation of Pope Pius VII from Napoleonic imprisonment.

Iconography

Mary holds a scepter in her right hand and carries the Child Jesus on her left arm. Both wear a crown.
