St. Bernard
St. Bernard of Clairvaux was born in France in 1090 and became one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the Middle Ages. He joined the Cistercian Order and played a key role in its expansion throughout Europe.
Through his writings, teachings and preaching, he contributed greatly to Christian theology and monastic spirituality. His wisdom and holiness earned him the respect of both Church and civil authorities.
St. Bernard is especially remembered for his deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many of his reflections on Mary remain among the most treasured works of Christian spirituality.
