Saint Andrew

Saint Andrew the Apostle is one of the most important disciples of Jesus Christ and is venerated as the first called among the apostles. The name Andrew comes from Greek and means “strong, courageous man”.

Andrew was born in Bethsaida, in Galilee, into a family of fishermen. His father was named Jonah, and his brother was Simon Peter, the future Apostle Peter. The two brothers worked as fishermen in Capernaum, on the shores of the Sea of Tiberias.

Andrew was a friend of the brothers James and John and had already become a disciple of John the Baptist. Together with John, he awaited the coming of the promised Messiah.

It was John the Baptist who pointed to Jesus as the Savior. Andrew immediately recognized the Messiah and decided to leave everything to follow Him. One day, while Andrew and his brother Simon were casting their nets into the lake, Jesus said to them: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Thus Andrew and Peter, together with James and John, became the first four apostles called by Christ.

The Gospels mention Saint Andrew in several episodes, although they provide few details about his later life. According to Christian tradition, after the First Council of the Apostles, Andrew dedicated himself to preaching the Gospel in Scythia, Bithynia, Thrace and Greece.

In the final years of his life, he settled in Patras, where he became bishop. During the reign of Emperor Nero, he was arrested and condemned to martyrdom.

Saint Andrew was crucified on a distinctive X-shaped cross, now known as the Cross of Saint Andrew. According to tradition, he was tied with ropes and remained alive on the cross for two days, continuing to preach to the people until his death.

Over the centuries, the relics of Saint Andrew were transferred to several locations. Part of them are still preserved today in the Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Amalfi, where the saint is deeply venerated.

The figure of Saint Andrew is especially important in both Eastern and Western Christian traditions. He is venerated as patron saint of numerous countries, cities and professions.

The famous flag of Scotland, featuring a white X-shaped cross on a blue background, recalls the Cross of Saint Andrew.
