Saint Rita of Cascia

Wife, mother, nun and saint of impossible causes

Born in Roccaporena in 1381, Saint Rita lived a life of sacrifice, patience and deep faith. Forced to marry, she endured an abusive husband for 18 years. After his death, she prayed that her twin sons would not seek revenge, even accepting their deaths to save their souls.

Denied three times entry into the Augustinian convent, she was finally admitted after a miracle: she appeared inside, transported by three saints. She lived in prayer and penance, received the wound of Christ’s thorn, and remained secluded until her death on May 22, 1447.

The story of the rose blooming in winter inspired the tradition of blessing roses each May 22. Saint Rita is loved worldwide, especially in Italy, South America and the Philippines. Her body rests in Cascia, a major pilgrimage destination.

Iconography: as a nun with a thorn wound, a rose, cross, palm, or in prayer with a crucifix.

Feast day: May 22
Patron saint: of impossible causes, exams, hardships, and against smallpox.
