Our Lady of the Rosary

Our Lady of the Rosary, also known as Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, is a famous representation of the Virgin Mary closely connected to the tradition of praying the Holy Rosary. As with the devotion to Our Lady of the Roses, the symbol of the rose here also carries a deep spiritual meaning linked to Christian faith and the figure of Mary.

The word rosary comes from the Latin “rosarium”, meaning “rose garden”. The rosary is a chain of beads used to accompany the recitation of prayers while meditating on the mysteries of the life of Jesus Christ.

The Virgin Mary is often depicted holding a rosary in her hand or surrounded by a large rosary. In many representations she carries the Child Jesus in her arms, since the prayer of the rosary summarizes the life of Christ through the mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

According to historical tradition, the prayer of the rosary developed within a monastery of the Carthusian Order in Trier. The German Carthusian monk Henry of Kalkar (1328-1408) spread the custom of praying five groups of ten “Hail Marys”, each preceded by the “Our Father” and concluded with the “Glory Be”.

The modern form of the Holy Rosary dates back to 1409 thanks to the Carthusian Dominic of Prussia (1382-1460), who summarized the life of Jesus in fifty main meditations, later reduced to fifteen by Adolf of Essen.

According to another very popular tradition, in 1208 the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Dominic de Guzmán, founder of the Dominican Order, and entrusted him with the rosary as a spiritual weapon in the fight against medieval heresies.

The modern rosary is composed of small beads for the Hail Mary and larger beads for the Our Father and the Glory Be. Originally, the Holy Rosary included the Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries and the Glorious Mysteries, meditating on the life of Jesus Christ.

In 2002, Pope John Paul II introduced the Luminous Mysteries through the apostolic letter “Rosarium Virginis Mariae”. Today, the Holy Rosary officially includes twenty mysteries divided into groups of five.

Throughout the centuries, many popes emphasized the importance of praying the rosary. Among them was Pope Sixtus IV, who in 1479 recommended the daily recitation of the rosary as an expression of faith and devotion.
