Saint Bernadette Soubirous, the young visionary of Lourdes, embodies humble faith and miracles. Her visions of the Immaculate Conception and the spring make Lourdes a beloved pilgrimage site.
Bernadette was born on February 7, 1844 in Lourdes to a humble family. Despite suffering from asthma, poverty and hardship, she carried a rosary and a deep faith.
At fourteen she had her first vision in the Grotto of Massabielle: a Lady in white identifying Herself as the Immaculate Conception. The daily visions that followed drew many pilgrims and believers.
She was instructed to dig, and a spring emerged, said to have healing properties. Lourdes became a place of miracles, devotion and hope for countless souls.
Later she joined the convent at Nevers, living in humility, illness and service until her death on April 16, 1879. Her body remained remarkably incorrupt during exhumations in 1909, 1919 and 1925.
