Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception is one of the most famous representations of the Virgin Mary and is based on the Catholic dogma declaring that Mary was preserved free from original sin from the very first instant of her conception. This Marian devotion represents purity, divine grace and the victory of good over evil.

During the Middle Ages, the dogma of the Immaculate Conception was the subject of intense theological debate, since it is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible. Only on December 8, 1854, did Pope Pius IX officially confirm this doctrine through the proclamation of the bull “Ineffabilis Deus”.

To celebrate this important event, a column with a bronze statue of the Immaculate Virgin was erected in Piazza di Spagna in Rome. The statue was created following the description given by the French nun Catherine Labouré, to whom the Virgin Mary appeared several times.

Over the centuries, the image of the Immaculate Virgin Mary has been interpreted by great Italian and international artists, giving rise to numerous artistic and symbolic representations. Marian symbolism developed through many forms and artistic styles, always expressing the ideas of purity, holiness and protection.

The Virgin Mary is often depicted standing upon a globe, while crushing the head of a serpent, symbolizing her victory over original sin and evil. This iconography also appears on the famous Miraculous Medal, one of the most widespread symbols of Marian devotion.

The Catholic Church celebrates the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, nine months before the feast of the Nativity of Mary. This celebration is one of the most important Marian feasts beloved by the faithful around the world.
