Camel Caravan for the Nativity Scene – Bergland Nativity

The Camel Caravan is an elaborate wooden composition from the Bergland Nativity, evoking the atmosphere of ancient caravans travelling through the landscapes of the East. Camels, attendants and carriers come together in a richly detailed scene that adds movement and storytelling to a Christmas Nativity display.

The group consists of seven elements: Camel with Pages, Reclining Camel, Camel, Pack Camel, Camel Driver, Shepherd with Waterskin and Porter. Each element contributes to the character of the procession, creating a varied and harmonious ensemble.

The Camel with Pages introduces the attendants accompanying the journey, while the Pack Camel recalls the transportation of luggage and supplies over long distances. The Reclining Camel suggests a moment of rest along the route, and the additional Camel completes the group of travelling animals.

The human figures add further depth to the composition. The Camel Driver represents one of the people responsible for guiding the animals, while the Shepherd with Waterskin highlights the importance of carrying water on a long journey. The Porter completes the scene, recalling the practical work involved in accompanying a caravan.

In the Nativity tradition, the caravan evokes the journey of the Three Wise Men to Bethlehem. The camels and their attendants help illustrate the long route travelled by the Magi from the East as they followed the star towards the birthplace of Jesus. The group can be arranged along a pathway, at the foot of a hillside or near the procession of the Wise Men.

The Camel Caravan can be combined with other proportionally matched figures from the same Bergland Nativity series to create a harmonious and richly detailed Christmas landscape. Its wooden craftsmanship and coloured finish reflect the traditional woodcarving heritage of Val Gardena - Dolomites.
