Saint Junípero Serra

Saint Junípero Serra, born in 1713 in Petra (Mallorca), was a Spanish Franciscan friar known as the Apostle of California. He left a successful academic career to dedicate himself to missionary work in the New World.

In 1749, he arrived in present-day Mexico and lived among the native populations, preaching the Gospel and founding missions. Starting in 1767, he moved north and founded important missions that grew into cities such as San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara.

Despite illness and age, he walked over 9,000 km on foot.

He died in 1784 at the mission he had founded in Carmel. Today his tomb lies in Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, a major pilgrimage site.

He was canonized in 2015 by Pope Francis.

Iconography: in a Franciscan habit with a rosary, crucifix, and a mission in hand
Feast Day: August 28
