Assumption of Mary

The Assumption of Mary is a famous representation of the Virgin Mary and one of the most important solemnities of the Catholic Church, celebrated every year on August 15. This Marian feast commemorates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven, body and soul, as a sign of her glory and closeness to God.

According to Christian tradition, the body of the Virgin Mary was carried into heaven supported by the angels. For this reason, Mary is often depicted surrounded by angels and luminous clouds while ascending toward heaven in an atmosphere of spirituality and divine light.

Over the centuries, the celebration of the Assumption of Mary became increasingly important in Church tradition. Popular devotion and theological reflection helped spread the cult of the Assumption throughout the Christian world.

On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII officially proclaimed the dogma of the Assumption through the apostolic constitution “Munificentissimus Deus”, declaring that Mary was assumed “into heavenly glory in body and soul.”

The Assumption represents for Christians a sign of hope, salvation and eternal life. The image of the Virgin Mary assumed into heaven recalls the promise of resurrection and divine glory.

In many works of sacred art, the Assumption of Mary is depicted with her arms open toward heaven, surrounded by clouds and accompanied by choirs of angels. This iconography expresses the purity, holiness and glory of the Mother of God.

In many European countries, the feast of the Assumption of Mary is recognized not only as a religious celebration but also as a public holiday, demonstrating the great historical and spiritual importance of this Marian feast.
